Lucien Cote for the determination of the patient ' s CSF HVA level

چکیده
The young age of the patient, appearance of his symptoms after a stroke, spontaneous improvement unrelated to treatment, lucencies seen on CT within the basal ganglia, and a relatively high level of HVA in cerebrospinal fluid, higher than usually seen in idiopathic Parkinson's disease,9 are in favour of this diagnosis. Other causes of Parkinsonism, such as normal pressure hydrocephalus or neuroleptic treatment were excluded. While earlier reported cases of vascular Parkinsonism represent additional probable examples of this condition, they are open to question in a number of respects. Hughes and others described a 39-year-old hypertensive man who developed a Parkinsonian mask following a stroke, and who had bilateral caudate infarcts revealed at necropsy.'0 It is not clear from the report if the patient had Parkinsonian features beyond facial masking. Tolosa and Santamaria reported three elderly men, two of whom were hypertensive, who had the insidious onset of Parkinsonism and who had infarcts of the basal ganglia revealed by CT scan." Although these cases are likely to be valid examples of vascular Parkinsonism, the insidious onset at a late age makes it difficult to definitely exclude the coincidental occurrence of idiopathic Parkinson's disease with what could have been silent basal ganglia infarctions. The concept of vascular Parkinsonism is supported by the study of Parkes et al who noted higher CSF HVA levels in patients with vascular Parkinsonism, diagnosed by clinical criteria, as compared with patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease."2

Homovanillic acid in human cerebrospinal fluid.--Its concentration gradient and reduced levels in patients with epilepsy.
The homovanillic acid (HVA) concentrations in the lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were determined in 38 epileptic and 39 control patients. The mean concentration of HVA was 23.9 ng/ml +/- 2.8 SEM for the epileptic group and 30.2 ng/ml +/- 2.1 SEM for the control group, respectively. Thus, HVA was significandly reduced in the patients with epilepsy compared with the controls. The mean HVA in th...

Non-human primate studies suggest that early environmental influences may have an enduring effect on central serotonin function. Therefore, it was decided to examine in humans whether childhood trauma might be related to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) as an adult. A total of 29 withdrawn cocaine-dependent patients complet...
متن کاملCSF concentration gradients of monoamine metabolites in patients with hydrocephalus.
Concentration gradients of homovanillic acid (HVA), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), were assessed in 762 successive CSF fractions (2 ml lumbar CSF) from 15 patients with the adult hydrocephalus syndrome (AHS) and 11 patients with hydrocephalus of other causes (mixed group). A mean volume of 49.6 (SD 11.8) ml CSF was removed in the AHS group and 5...
متن کاملSpinal reflexes and the concentrations of 5-HIAA, MHPG, and HVA in lumbar cereborspinal fluid after spinal lesions in man.
Descending bulbospinal pathways that employ specific neurotransmitter substances are known to be capable of modulating segmental reflex activity in the experimental animal. To determine whether this might also occur in man correlations have been sought between the activity in spinal reflex pathways and the lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), 3 ...
متن کاملPhenotype of postural instability/gait difficulty in Parkinson disease: relevance to cognitive impairment and mechanism relating pathological proteins and neurotransmitters
Parkinson disease (PD) is identified as tremor-dominant (TD) and postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD) phenotypes. The relationships between motor phenotypes and cognitive impairment and the underlying mechanisms relating pathological proteins and neurotransmitters in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are unknown. We evaluated the motor symptoms and cognitive function by scales, and detected ...
